WOOD you like to know?

There is a careful balance with wood, in its most natural form, being successful in interior design.  If not planned correctly, it can look like too much or it throws the room into a serious wood overload situation!  I have found some amazing examples of organic wood details, with a smashing results, implemented by the talented eye of some of our most respected design leaders.  It is the opinion of many, that Michael Taylor started the concept with his sexy California style.  He is still referred to as an iconic figure and I love looking at old images of his work.  You can purchase pieces from his collections and of course, 1stdibs is the perfect place to pick up a treasure of his.  Many of today’s artists have found new and interesting ways to get the look in to design projects.  I must say, one of my favorite photos is the bedroom by Haynes-Roberts.  My firm, the595project, has a beautiful table base in inventory and I think the Haynes-Roberts take is really special.  They painted the table base white and paired it with iron stools upholstered in white Mongolian hides.  It is really gives a new take on the table base concept and  moves it to a restful and calming place. It is the right amount, in the right project, that makes the specification look hip and current.

I really WOOD like to suggest that you consider putting a bit of the natural beauty of wood into your next project.  It is a wonderful addition…

Where are you going this summer?

I love to be surprised and transformed by architecture.  The new Hotel-Hotel in Canberra, the Capital of Australia is a statement to visual wonderment!  March Studio designed this wild lobby for Nishi Commercial in an area called New Action.  The area merges residential, with hotel, with shopping and dining along with many other wonderful things to experience in this destination concept.  You will not see the likes of this architectural masterpiece of pick-up sticks again soon!   This is an example of rustic perfection, along with the beauty of re-purposed timber, dancing creatively with precast concrete, in many forms, accented with carefully selected vintage furnishings.  It is designed to encourage you to linger and enjoy and admire.

Hotel-Hotel provides an atmosphere of design utopia.  The days of boring, cookie cutter interiors are gone and to the delight of many, you can now select a hotel that is hip, well curated and thrilling to stay and play, dine and indulge!  I marvel at the opportunity to experience spaces that make me think and inspire me to try something new.

I hope after reading this you will want to jump at the chance to hop a flight to Australia!

Poetic Ocean Spaces

With the warm weather in full swing, the thought of cool, water and the vastness of the sea sounds like a perfect remedy for the heat.  I still think of my trip to Maui last April and the mesmerizing effect the ocean had on me.  Watching the movement of the water was transforming.  I can’t imagine how captivating it would be to actually have a residence on the ocean and wake up to the beauty of the water everyday!.  I’m sure it’s poetic…

“Those who live by the sea can hardly form a single thought of which the sea would not be part.”

Herman Broch

“Hark, now hear the sailors cry, smell the sea, and feel the sky.  Let your soul and spirit fly, into the mystic.”
Van Morrison

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net forever.”

Jacques Cousteau

“We are tied to the ocean, and when we go back to the sea…Whether it is to sail or to watch it, we are going back from whence we came.”

John F. Kennedy
